General
Thurlaston lies in the heart of rural Leicestershire where villagers can enjoy all the benefits of a rural lifestyle combined with city life in nearby Leicester. With a pub, school,church, and sports grounds Thurlaston has something for everyone.

History

Records show that the village of Thurlaston has existed since Anglo-Saxon times, when it was ‘beholden’ to the King of Mercia. During the reign of King Withlaf, in 833 AD, noblemen in the village gave part of the land to Croyland Abbey for sacred purposes. Not long after this, the land was passed to Turchitel, a grandson of Egbert, King of Wessex and a corruption of his name gave the village name of Thurlaston.

Thurlaston is situated approximately eight miles from Leicester and three miles from Enderby with it’s nearest neighbours being the villages of Earl Shilton and Huncote.

Education

There are a number of playgroups and nurseries in the area, including a Tots Group which meets in the village hall.

From aged 5 – 11 years the children of the village go to Thurlaston Primary School in the village.

Independent Schools are at Dixie Grammar School and Leicester Grammar School.,

 

Sports

Thurlaston Sports Club

Formed in 1978, Thurlaston Sports Club, with its pitches on Earl Shilton Lane offers the chance to play football and cricket to people in Thurlaston and the surrounding areas.

The football section - The Thurlaston Magpies - has six sections, one senior and five junior, catering for people from the age of 4 years upwards.

Currently, both boys and girls play up to the age of 10 with boys only thereafter.

The Club also has a cricket section who play on Saturdays and Sundays, in the season.

In the surrounding area are many sports and social facilities with Golf Clubs at both Hinckley and nearby Croft. Leicester has a first class Rugby and Football Clubs and there are more local football, cricket and tennis clubs to join.

In Thurlaston there is All Saints Church of England  Parish Church

Amenities

Thurlaston is a thriving, active community with many groups and associations for it’s residents. There is a Heritage Group, a Ramblers Group, a Mother and Toddler Group, also a Mother’s Union and a Coffee Club which meets weekly.
